Does my pickup or panel truck qualify for Personal Property Tax Relief (PPTR)?

Virginia Code § 46.2-100 was amended to broaden the definition of pickup or panel truck to include vehicles “having a registered gross weight in excess of 7,500 pounds but not in excess of 10,000 pounds.” Beginning January 1, 2017, a pickup truck or panel truck may qualify for PPTR if it is registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as a personal use vehicle, has a gross weight of 10,000 pounds or less, and displays standard passenger plates.

NOTE: If license plates are changed from truck plates to passenger plates or a gross weight change is recorded with the Department of Motor Vehicles after January 1st which causes a previously unqualified vehicle to become qualified, the vehicle may be considered for qualification for the following tax year.
