Is my farm use vehicle subject to local personal property tax?

No. Virginia Code § 58.1-3505 provides Virginia localities with the authority to exempt from local personal property taxes, motor vehicles that are used primarily for agricultural purposes, for which the owner is not required to obtain a registration certificate, license plate, and decal or pay a registration fee pursuant to Virginia Code 46.2-665, 46.2-666, 46.2-670, 46.2-672, or 46.2-673. The Board of Supervisors exempted such vehicles from local personal property tax effective July 1, 2013.

Effective July 1, 2024, Virginia Code § 46.2-684.2 requires an owner or lessee of a pickup, panel truck or sport utility vehicle claiming a registration exemption for a farm vehicle pursuant to §§ 46.2-665, 46.2-666, 46.2-670, 46.2-672, or 46.2-673 to obtain a permanent farm use placard from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and display the placard on the vehicle at all times.

Additional information concerning the farm use placard for unregistered farm use vehicles and farm license plates (F-tags) for registering farm vehicles can be found on DMV’s website.
