Suspicious Device at Independence High School Determined to be Unapproved Science Project

Loudoun County, VA (May 23, 2022) – This morning, a Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer was notified by school personnel at Independence High School that burn marks were located on the sidewalk outside of the school. It was determined the incident occurred on Saturday, and the students involved were identified.  

As part of the investigation, a suspicious device was located at the school, and the Loudoun County Bomb Squad, and the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the school. The school was evacuated for approximately 30 minutes and the device was rendered safe.

The device was determined to be part of an unapproved school science project. 

The incident remains under investigation by the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in coordination with Loudoun County Public Schools.
