On February 16, 2022, the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) recommended a total of $2,000,000 in federal funding for Loudoun County’s Sterling Boulevard Sidewalk and Trail Connection Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) project.
The project will complete missing links of sidewalk connecting directly to the regional Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail and includes improvements that will make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists traveling to or from the W&OD trail, a key artery in the National Capital Trail Network. The project calls for:
- Design and construction of 0.56 miles of missing sidewalk links along Sterling Boulevard.
- Construction between Shaw Road and Glenn Drive of a 0.18-mile, buffer-separated, 6-foot-wide sidewalk.
- Construction of a 0.38-mile, buffer-separated, 10-foot-wide shared-use path.
Under the federal Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program, the TPB, in conjunction with the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB), is responsible for selecting smaller-scale transportation projects to fund, such as pedestrian and bicycle facilities, trails, safe routes to school projects, community improvements and environmental mitigation in suburban Maryland, Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia.
The Sterling Boulevard Sidewalk and Trail Connection project has been prioritized as the number one sidewalk and trail program in Loudoun County’s current Capital Improvement Program.
The eastern limit of this project meets with the W&OD Trail and will connect with an adjacent project to construct an overpass for bicyclist and pedestrians where the W&OD Trail crosses Sterling Boulevard. The western limit of this project connects to an existing sidewalk network which extends down Sterling Boulevard to Pacific Boulevard and along Pacific Boulevard.
With the TPB approval, this project, along with other approved projects, will go to the CTB for approval and inclusion in the next Virginia Department of Transportation’s Six-Year Implementation Plan for the period of Fiscal Year 2023 – Fiscal Year 2028.
