Ashburn Man Arrested After Assaulting Deputy, Pursuit
Loudoun County, VA (January 30, 2021): An Ashburn man is in custody after he fled in his vehicle from a Loudoun County Sheriff’s Deputy.
The driver, Ronald B. Smith, 47, was taken into custody on January 29, after a pursuit that began in the Ashburn area and ended on Route 28 southbound near the Dulles Toll Road. Smith is charged with assault on law enforcement, felony eluding, reckless driving, obstruction of justice and driving without a license. Smith was also wanted out of Fairfax County for reckless driving and felony eluding.
The incident began after the LCSO received a call shortly after 4 p.m. for a report of a suspected intoxicated driver in the Ashburn Village area. The caller reported the driver nearly struck him and another vehicle. An LCSO Deputy located the vehicle in the area of Gloucester Parkway and Ashburn Village Boulevard where the driver was stopped at a gas station. During the incident, the suspect struggled with the deputy and struck the deputy multiple times. The suspect then closed his car door catching the deputy’s hand and was able to flee in his vehicle. A pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit continued down Russell Branch Parkway, onto Loudoun County Parkway, Route 7 westbound, Route 7 eastbound, and finally Route 28 southbound where the pursuit ended. LCSO deputies deployed in the area of Route 7 near Route 28 causing damage to the tires of the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect later lost control of his vehicle near the Dulles Toll Road and attempted to flee on foot.
As the suspect was taken into custody, he continued to not follow commands and struggle with the deputies.
Both Smith and the deputy were treated and released from a local hospital for injuries received during the incident.
Smith remains held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center on no bond.
