On Saturday, August 17, 2019, Loudoun County Animal Services (LCAS) will participate in the fifth annual nationwide “Clear the Shelters” free pet adoption event from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Adoption fees will be waived for all available pets which includes cats, kittens, dogs, puppies, small pets, and reptiles. The event will take place at the Loudoun County Animal Shelter, 39820 Charles Town Pike, Waterford.
“Every year we have a line of people waiting when we open the doors,” says Shelter Operations Manager Amy Martin. “And there is nothing better than the feeling we get when we send homeless pets into the arms of loving families.”
In addition to adoptions, activities will include a children’s craft tent, raffle baskets and giveaways from local businesses, a complimentary snack bar and a Touch-A-Truck opportunity with an Animal Control Officer. Kids of all ages will have the chance to meet with an Animal Control Officer, see an officer’s truck and learn how they help pets and wildlife in the community.
In an effort to help as many pets as possible, LCAS is teaming up with four partner shelters to double the number of available pets in the week leading up to Clear the Shelters. “Pet overpopulation is still a struggle for many of our neighboring communities, but Clear the Shelters gives us the chance to help match pets in need with families looking to help save lives. It really is a win-win,” Martin said.
Prospective adopters can view available pets online at loudoun.gov/animals. The standard adoption screening process still applies during this promotion and most adoptions can be completed on the same day.
All dogs, cats and rabbits adopted from LCAS are spayed or neutered and receive a microchip which is registered to their adopter. Dogs and cats also receive age-appropriate vaccinations. The shelter frequently has many pets available for adoption including hamsters, guinea pigs, turtles, rabbits, other small pets and livestock.
