Sterling Man Sentenced to Fifty Years in Prison for Sex Offenses
LEESBURG, Virginia – November 18, 2016. Avtar Singh, 56, appeared before Judge Douglas L. Fleming Jr. in Loudoun County Circuit Court for sentencing five counts of sexual offenses against a minor. Fleming imposed a total active sentence of fifty years in the Virginia Department of Corrections.
Singh pleaded no contest to the charges on March 14, 2016.
Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Gigi Lawless described the offenses as “vile, gut-wrenching, heinous and appalling.” “The Virginia Sentencing Guidelines do not consider the egregious nature of the offenses and they are woefully inadequate,” said Lawless. “The defendant abused his position of trust and took advantage of a vulnerable victim,” continued Lawless.
Before imposing a sentence, Fleming noted that the facts of the case could not be “sanitized or minimized," and that the defendant’s actions have caused “profound and incalculable damage to the victim.”
Upon his release, Singh will be placed on two years of post-release supervision, 20 years of supervised probation, and he must successfully complete a sex offender treatment program.
Pursuant to Virginia’s Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry Act, Singh will also be required to register as a sex offender. Information about the Virginia’s Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry and those on it can be found on the Virginia State Police website: http://sex-offender.vsp.virginia.gov.
