Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Gigi Lawless Receives Virginia S. “Ginny” Duvall Distinguished Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court Prosecutor Award
Loudoun Prosecutor Recognized by Peers with Statewide Award
NORFOLK, VA – April 4, 2016. Loudoun County Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney and Victim and Witness Assistance Program Director, Gigi Lawless, is the 2016 recipient of the Virginia S. Duvall Distinguished Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court Prosecutor Award.
The award was presented by The Virginia Association of Commonwealth's Attorneys at their annual Spring Conference. Lawless stood before approximately 700 fellow prosecutors as she was recognized for her achievements. The award is named for “Ginny” Duvall, a former Chesterfield County Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney who passed away in 2008. The award is presented to a prosecutor who works tirelessly to improve the juvenile justice system and the prosecution of cases involving domestic violence, child abuse, child sexual assault and elder abuse. Lawless becomes just the 8th recipient of the Duvall Award since it was instituted in 2009.
Lawless holds a unique position in the Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, as she not only leads the Office’s Child Sex Crimes and Domestic Violence unit, but she also serves as the Director of the Loudoun County Victim and Witness Assistance Program.
Lawless is a key member of Loudoun County’s Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART), which assists in coordinating a county-wide response to domestic violence. The DART has provided local and statewide training on this issue and has been recognized by the Attorney General’s Office as a model program for other communities to duplicate.
Additionally, Lawless was part of a multi-disciplinary team that brought the first ever Child Advocacy Center (CAC) to Loudoun County. She is often seen working in conjunction with the Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter (LAWS) to ensure the safety of victims of domestic violence throughout Loudoun County.
“Ms. Lawless is an invaluable part of Loudoun County’s prosecution team, and her trial skills are particularly noteworthy,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Plowman. “She has successfully tried some of the most difficult cases in this office involving both child and adult victims.” “I can’t think of many people more dedicated to their work and more worthy of this recognition,” continued Plowman.
Lawless is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and The University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. Prior to beginning her tenure with the Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office in 2003, Lawless served as an Assistant District Attorney General for the City of Nashville and Davidson County, Tennessee and as a Public Defender in Nashville, Tennessee.
