Loudoun County Update

  • Booster Update: Loudoun County is now offering booster doses of the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for certain individuals as recommended last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and authorized by the Food and Drug Administration and the Virginia Department of Health. This is in addition to the previously approved Pfizer vaccine booster. Also, people who are eligible for a booster vaccine may choose which vaccine to receive as their booster – the 'mix-and-match' approach. Booster shots are available by appointment only at the county's Dulles Town Center clinic. Here is who is eligible: 
    • J&J: Anyone who received the J&J vaccine can receive a booster dose of any of the three vaccine types at least two months following their initial vaccination.
    • Moderna and Pfizer: Anyone who received their initial two-dose series of Moderna or Pfizer vaccine at least six months (180 days) ago is eligible for a booster dose of any of the three types of vaccine if they are in any the groups approved by the CDC and authorized by VDH. The groups are people 65 years and older, residents of long-term care facilities, people 18-64 years old with underlying medical conditions and people 18-64 years old who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional settings, such as, but not limited to, health care workers and caregivers for frail or immunocompromised people. 
    • To make an appointment at the county's Dulles Town Center site for a booster or an initial dose of vaccine, visit loudoun.gov/covid19vaccine. Anyone without internet access or who needs assistance making an appointment can call the county information line at 703-737-8300 weekdays 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

  • Vaccine for Children 5-11: The Loudoun County Health Department is planning for the expected approval of the use of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5–11 years old. An advisory committee to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, is scheduled to meet tomorrow, Tuesday, October 26, 2021, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.,  to consider the use of a Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11. View meeting materials and information on how to monitor the virtual meeting. This is one step in a multi-step approval process, which will include action by the FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Virginia Department of Health. 

  • Free COVID-19 Testing October 26: The next Loudoun County-sponsored COVID-19 testing event is tomorrow, Tuesday, October 26, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., at Franklin Park, 17501, Franklin Park Drive, Purcellville. Anyone who has potentially been exposed to someone with COVID-19, regardless of their vaccination status, should be tested for COVID-19. Also, anyone exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue and a new loss of taste or smell should get tested. The free, drive-thru testing events are held rain or shine. They are scheduled weekly through November. They are normally held on Tuesdays, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., at various locations across the county, except for the first week in November. That week's testing event will be November 3 due to the November 2 Election Day holiday. Required registration forms can be filled out ahead of time. You can find links to the forms as well as a schedule of testing events online at loudoun.gov/COVID19testing.

  • Halloween Safety:  Loudoun County health officials offer advice on how to keep your little ghosts and goblins safe this Halloween. Recommendations include:
    • Trick-or-treating outdoors in small groups or hosting a small outdoor gathering.
    • Incorporating a face covering into a child’s costume (over the age of 2). 
    • If giving out candy, consider individual bags to hand out or a contactless option such as a candy chute. 
    • Washing your hands before going trick-or-treating or handing out candy. Hand sanitizer should be used while trick-or-treating or handing out candy when soap and water aren’t available.
    • Maintaining physical distancing from people not in your household or who have not been vaccinated.
