On December 13, 2023, the Board of Supervisors adopted the Loudoun County Zoning Ordinance, which replaces the previous Revised 1993 Zoning Ordinance. The effective date of the new Zoning Ordinance is December 13, 2023.
An update to the county's Zoning Ordinance was necessary following adoption of the Loudoun County 2019 Comprehensive Plan to align the county’s vision with its regulations. The Zoning Ordinance regulates land use throughout the county and is the primary implementation tool for the Comprehensive Plan.
Below are highlights of the changes between the previous ordinance (Revised 1993 Zoning Ordinance) and the new Loudoun County Zoning Ordinance. These highlights, in each new chapter of the rewritten ordinance, provide a brief overview of how zoning regulations have been updated to streamline and modernize the ordinance while increasing flexibility where appropriate.
