Special Considerations for Clinical Requirements
[*] After the students have exceeded the required number of operating room rotation hours by eight hours, oral intubations may be performed on an advanced mannequin capable of facilitating interactive airway scenarios (e.g., SimMan) at the discretion of the course coordinator and program director.
[**] Paramedic students must start at least two in each age group: pediatric, adult, and geriatric.
[***] If the student has exceeded the minimum number of Labor and Delivery hours by four, but still does not have the minimum two deliveries observed, the requirements may be substituted with high-fidelity obstetric delivery scenarios, at the discretion of the program director and medical director.
[****] Team member calls can be ALS or BLS but the patient must be transported. Team Leader calls must all be ALS. See Part 4: Field Experience for further information.
[*****] AEMT students will spend the first 8-10 hour shift in the Adult ED starting IVs and administering medications without focusing on patient assessments.
Credit for Prior Experience
Students participating in the ‘Paramedic Program – Advanced Placement’ must complete the full clinical requirements of the Paramedic program as shown above. However, if the student falls into one of the following descriptions, they may apply for Credit for Prior Experience:
- A student in the Advanced Placement program who completed their initial Intermediate level training at the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Training Academy, and successfully precepted in Loudoun under the Direct Pathway (as detailed in LCCFRS EMS Policy #14).
- A student in the Advanced Placement program who did not complete their initial Intermediate level training at the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Training Academy, but can show evidence of their Intermediate program being from a school accredited by CAAHEP/CoAEMSP, and who successfully precepted in Loudoun under the Direct Pathway (as detailed in LCCFRS EMS Policy #14)
If a student completed their precepting under the Accelerated Pathway in EMS Policy #14, they will not be authorized to apply for Credit for Prior Experience, and will need to complete the full clinical requirements of the Paramedic program.
Procedure for Credit for Prior Experience
Any student in the Paramedic Program – Advanced Placement who wishes to apply for Credit for Prior Experience needs to submit a letter to the Paramedic Program Director and Operational Medical Director requesting the Credit for Prior Experience. After approval from the Program Director and Operational Medical Director, the student will be authorized to complete the clinical hours, skills and assessment requirements as shown in the Credit for Prior Experience Column in the Clinical Requirements Chart.
